Unlike most marine mammals, the Sea Otter has no blubber layer, making the condition and cleanliness of its fur critical to its survival.

Sea Otters have a stocky, streamlined body, broad flat tail, and large, fully webbed hind feet that function as powerful flippers for swimming. The recovery of Sea Otter populations along the California coast has been directly linked to the recovery and expansion of kelp forest ecosystems in those same areas.
Despite their remarkable recovery from near-extinction, Sea Otters remain Endangered and face a range of persistent and emerging threats. Oil spills are among the most catastrophic risks — even a moderate spill can mat and destroy the fur's insulating properties, causing rapid hypothermia and death. Entanglement in fishing nets and crab pot lines kills otters incidentally across their range. Infectious disease, particularly a parasitic infection caused by the land-based pathogen Toxoplasma gondii — which enters the ocean through cat feces in freshwater runoff — has become an increasingly significant cause of mortality in California Sea Otters.
Prey depletion from overfishing and the effects of climate change on coastal ecosystems also threaten long-term food security. In some areas, increased predation by killer whales has been linked to population declines among Aleutian Island otters. Continued legal protection, pollution management, and active monitoring remain essential to securing the Sea Otter's future.
