WildlifeoPedia Introduces Its First Campaign
WildlifeoPedia officially releases its first campaign: ''Voice for Voiceless: Seal the Future''
April 19, 2025
In a powerful stand against cruelty and silence, WildlifeoPedia—the youth-led wildlife conservation brand—has officially launched its very first campaign: “Voice for Voiceless: Seal the Future.” The campaign directly targets the inhumane commercial hunting of harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus), aiming to raise awareness, spark action, and ultimately help bring an end to one of the most controversial and heartbreaking practices in the modern wildlife trade.
A Tradition of Violence
Each year, thousands of harp seals—many of them pups just weeks old—are killed on the ice during the Canadian seal hunt (The seal hunt also takes place in other parts of the world but since Canada is leading, this campaign is mainly focused on the Canadian commercial seal hunt). Often clubbed or shot, these animals are hunted primarily for their fur. While the European Union banned seal product imports in 2009, commercial hunts continue, particularly in Canada, under the defense of culture and economy. However, annual seals killed have reduced by over 90% in the past 10 years!
Seal the Future, Literally
The campaign includes a digital badge (downloadable for free on the Seal Hunt page), and even more detailed insights, aiming to help people understand what the commercial seal hunt actually involves. WildlifeoPedia is also encouraging supporters to contact lawmakers and companies that still ''profit'' from the trade in seal products. If it weren't for the Canadian government spending millions of dollars every year, the industry would've collapsed a long time ago.
Controversy and Courage
Of course, not everyone agrees. Some Canadian fisheries unions defend the hunt as a sustainable harvest with deep cultural roots. WildlifeoPedia isn’t denying that—but says the suffering outweighs the symbolism. Some argue that seals would be responsible for a collapse of cod populations, however the collapsing cod stocks are caused by human's overfishing. “There are better ways to honour history than with blood-soaked snow”.
The Road Ahead
WildlifeoPedia hopes to inspire as many people as possible (to take action) through this campaign. You don't need to rush either since we're not thinking of quitting anytime soon, meaning you can get involved with this campaign now, tomorrow, or in years from now. This campaign is just a step in the journey involving many more efforts.
